Foxfield Railway - (Foxfield Colliery)

A former colliery turned railway museum just outside Stoke-on-Trent, Foxfield Railway keeps a slice of industrial heritage running on actual track. You'll find vintage steam locomotives, heritage carriages, and the kind of atmospheric railway yard that makes you understand why this corner of Staffordshire mattered during the coal boom. The site itself - all red brick, coal dust history, and working railway lines - feels genuinely lived-in rather than polished up for tourists.

It's absolutely worth the visit if you're into railways or industrial history. Kids get a proper kick out of the steam trains, though younger ones might find the static exhibits a bit slow after twenty minutes or so. Adults with any interest in Midlands heritage will spend a good couple of hours here, maybe longer if you grab refreshments and settle in.

The railway runs heritage trains on select days - check ahead, as timetables vary seasonally. Admission is modest, and the whole experience has that authentic, volunteer-run feel you don't get at glossier attractions. Allow at least two hours if you're taking a train ride, an hour and a half if you're just wandering the yard.

Camped at Stone Wall Farm CL or Hales Hall just down the road, you're within easy striking distance. It slots nicely into a broader Staffordshire trip - combine it with whatever else draws you to the Potteries area. Not a day-long mission on its own, but exactly the sort of offbeat stop that makes a caravan holiday genuinely interesting.
