Calderbrook Alpacas

Alpacas in the Pennines might sound like an oddly placed petting farm, but Calderbrook Alpaca Farm near Hebden Bridge has become exactly the sort of low-key spot that makes a rainy Yorkshire afternoon worthwhile. You get to walk around the fields, meet the animals up close, and watch them do what alpacas do best - look vaguely unimpressed with human attention whilst being oddly compelling to stare at.

The animals are friendly enough, though they won't bowl you over with enthusiasm. Kids tend to find them far more interesting than you'd expect; there's something about feeding them that keeps children occupied longer than it has any right to. Adults often end up just as engaged, I've noticed - alpacas have that weirdly calming effect. The setting itself is proper countryside, with decent views across toward the moor.

It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a half-day activity from Hebden Bridge itself, especially if the weather's turned and you've had enough of hiking. Pair it with a walk around the town's independent shops or grab lunch at one of the better cafes. If you're based at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite or Old Chamber Camping, it's close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere.

Allow a couple of hours, maybe longer if you're with young kids. Go early if you can - the animals are more active before midday. Not a full day's entertainment on its own, but as part of a broader Pennine itinerary, it fills a gap nicely.
