Butterhole Hill

The name alone makes you smile - Butterhole Hill - and once you're up there, you'll understand why locals call it that. It's a proper little peak in the Lowlands just outside Dumfries, offering decent views across rolling farmland and moorland. The walk itself is straightforward rather than strenuous, which makes it accessible for families and casual walkers without needing fell-walking experience.

You get a real sense of the Dumfries & Galloway landscape from the top - that broad, open country that characterises this corner of Scotland. On clear days the views stretch far enough to make the short walk feel worthwhile. It's the kind of place where you can be back to your car within an hour, making it ideal as a morning outing from one of the nearby campsites like Marthrown of Mabie or Criffel View, both just a couple of miles away.

This works well as part of a park holiday itinerary rather than a destination in itself. Combine it with Caerlaverock Castle, which sits down at Caerlaverock Castle Corner Camp Site five miles south, and you've got a proper day sorted. The hill appeals most to walkers who fancy a quick ascent with a payoff, and to families camping locally who want something active without committing to a long day out.

There's no visitor infrastructure up there - it's just the hill and you. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you're after. Bring proper kit and go when the weather's settled.
