Brunt Knott

The walk up Brunt Knott isn't long, but it punches well above its weight. You're looking at roughly 45 minutes to the summit from Kendal side, climbing through proper Lakeland fell terrain - bracken, rough grass, the works. The view from the top sweeps across the southern Lake District, with Windermere glinting away to the northwest and the higher fells rolling off in all directions. It's the kind of spot where you actually feel like you've earned your lunch.

Walkers will love this one. It's steep enough to feel like an achievement but short enough that you're not committing your entire day. Families with kids aged eight upwards should manage fine if they're used to hills. The path is clear enough, though it can be boggy after rain. Allow two to three hours return if you want to potter about at the top and soak it in.

There's no entrance fee - it's fell walking, proper. The nearest town is Kendal, which sits just a few miles south and serves as your jumping-off point. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks - Windermere Camping is closest at 2.6 miles away - Brunt Knott makes an excellent half-day outing. Parkdean's Limefitt site, nestled in the Lake District proper, puts you even better placed for this walk and plenty of other local routes. Best tackled on a clear morning when the visibility justifies the climb.
