Brundholme Wood

The walk through Brundholme Wood feels properly tucked away once you leave Keswick's tourist buzz behind. This is working forest - Forestry Commission land with proper trails running through it, the kind of place where you actually breathe in pine and don't trip over crowds.

You get mixed woodland, mostly conifer plantation but with enough age and character to make it worth an hour or two on foot. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though nothing fancy. Walkers will find it straightforward terrain, good if you're after a leg-stretch without the Lake District's more famous fell-trudging. It's the sort of spot where kids can run about without their parents fretting constantly, and the shade in summer is genuinely useful rather than just nice.

There's no visitor centre or café here - it's not that kind of place. Free to access, basically. Allow two to three hours if you're meandering properly, less if you just want a quick circuit. Go on a weekday if you can; weekends pull folk from all over.

Staying at Threlkeld Hall or Kestrel Lodge, you're well-positioned for this. It slots nicely into a morning before heading to bigger lakes or fells elsewhere. Not spectacular, but it does what it promises - decent woodland walking close to Keswick without the paywall attractions or the Instagram hordes. That's worth something.
