Brock Hill

At just 167 metres, this isn't exactly the Lake District, but what Brock Hill lacks in altitude it makes up for in proper New Forest views. A gentle climb through ancient woodland brings you to a modest summit that looks out over the heathland towards Brockenhurst - and on clear days, you can spot the Isle of Wight shimmering in the distance.

Families with younger children will find this well within reach, though the path can get a bit muddy after rain. The ponies that graze freely across the forest often wander near the lower slopes, which always goes down well with kids.

Walkers looking for a quick leg-stretch rather than a proper expedition will appreciate that you can bag this summit and be back at your car within an hour. It's free to roam, naturally, and the approach from several directions means you can easily link it with longer forest walks if the mood takes you.

From the holiday parks dotted around the area - Hollands Wood and Setthorns are both within easy reach - this makes for a pleasant morning outing before an afternoon at the beach or exploring Brockenhurst village.
