Apsey Shade

Dense woodland paths wind through ancient beech and oak at this well-kept section of the New Forest, just outside Brockenhurst. Walking through the dappled shade feels properly restorative - the kind of forest therapy that London escapees desperately need.

Families with young children will find it manageable, though pushchairs might struggle on the rougher tracks. Dog walkers love it here, and you'll spot plenty of New Forest ponies grazing nearby if you're lucky. The paths connect nicely with longer walking routes if you fancy extending your ramble.

It's free to explore, naturally, and worth allowing a couple of hours if you want to properly unwind. Early morning visits reward you with fewer crowds and better wildlife spotting chances.

From campsites like Setthorns or Hollands Wood, this makes a lovely gentle introduction to the forest for families who aren't ready for the full-on hiking experience elsewhere in the park. Black Knowl Caravan Club members have it particularly easy - it's barely a mile down the road. Not spectacular, but thoroughly pleasant woodland walking that delivers exactly what it promises.
