Five Thorns Hill

Standing at just 76 metres above sea level, Five Thorns Hill might not sound impressive on paper, but this gentle rise in the New Forest delivers surprisingly good views across the heathland for such a modest climb. The walk up from Brockenhurst takes about 20 minutes through typical forest terrain - mainly heath and scattered oak trees.

Families with younger children will find this an achievable target without the leg-burning effort of proper hill walking. The summit itself is unmarked and frankly a bit underwhelming - you'll know you're there more by GPS than any obvious peak. But the panoramic views over the forest canopy towards the Solent make it worth the gentle effort.

Walkers staying at nearby campsites like Setthorns or Hollands Wood will appreciate having a proper objective for an evening stroll. It's free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though autumn brings the best colours across the heathland below.

Don't expect dramatic scenery or Instagram-worthy summit shots. This is classic New Forest walking - subtle, peaceful, and properly English in its understated way. Allow an hour return from Brockenhurst, or make it part of a longer forest ramble if you're based at one of the National Park campsites nearby.
