Bridestones Moor

Two massive gritstone boulders sit on Bridestones Moor like something dropped by a careless giant. They're the real deal - genuinely prehistoric, though whether they're naturally weathered or deliberately shaped is still debated. Either way, walking up here from Hebden Bridge feels properly wild, even though the town's only a few miles off.

The moor itself is open moorland with proper views across the Pennines. On a clear day you can see for miles. The boulders themselves aren't enormous - you can walk round them, touch them, get a sense of scale - but there's something about standing in front of stone that's been here for thousands of years that gets to you.

It's free and takes about an hour round trip from the nearest parking, though the approach involves a fair bit of uphill slog. Your legs will know you've been there. Walkers will love this, and it works well as a half-day addition to a longer Pennine ramble. History types get a kick out of it too, though there's not masses of interpretation on site - bring your own research.

Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of a tramp will manage fine. Younger ones might find it a bit underwhelming - it's not a play area, just two rocks and a view.

If you're camping at Old Chamber or the Hebden Bridge Caravan Club site, this is an easy add-on to your local walks. The moorland here connects with other routes across the uplands, so you can make it part of something bigger rather than a standalone trip.
