Bracken Haw

The walk up Bracken Haw is straightforward enough, which is probably why so many people tackle it when they're based around Skipton. It's a modest peak by Yorkshire standards - nothing that'll have you gasping for breath - but the views across Wharfedale make the climb worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right across the valley, and that's genuinely impressive given how close you are to the limestone villages.

The fell itself is proper moorland: rough grass, heather, and bracken (hence the name). Paths are generally well-marked, though it can get boggy after rain - not uncommon in the Dales. Most walkers allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you fancy lingering at the top. There's no facilities up there, so bring water and a packed lunch if you're making an afternoon of it.

It suits families with decent walking legs and anyone who wants a decent Dales walk without the serious commitment of longer peaks. History buffs might find it less rewarding than somewhere like Skipton itself, but walkers will appreciate the landscape. If you're camped at Howgill Lodge, Wharfedale Caravan and Motorhome Club, or any of the other sites scattered around the valley, Bracken Haw makes a solid half-day outing. Access is free - it's open fell walking - and you can start from various points depending on where you're staying. Summer's the obvious choice, though spring brings good visibility too.
