Bowlees Molluscarium

The Bowlees Molluscarium sits in a corner of County Durham that most people miss entirely. It's a small museum devoted entirely to molluscs - shells, fossils, the lot - housed in what feels like someone's passion project rather than a polished tourist attraction. The collection is genuinely impressive if you're into that sort of thing: ammonites, belemnites, local specimens from the Pennine rocks nearby. Bishop Auckland is the nearest proper town, about a fifteen-minute drive away, so it's worth planning this as part of a wider day out rather than expecting it to fill an afternoon on its own.

Geology enthusiasts will find it excellent. Families with young kids might struggle unless they're already fossil-mad - it's quite specialist. The real appeal is how it connects to the landscape around you. You're in proper walking country here, with the River Wear and Bowlees itself just outside. The nearby caravan parks - Leekworth and Mickleton Mill are your best bets, both within a few miles - put you right in the heart of it all.

Admission details are tricky to pin down from here, so ring ahead before you visit. It's the kind of place that might only open weekends or during school holidays, so don't turn up expecting it to be running. That said, if you're staying at one of those highly-rated parks and you're interested in local geology and natural history, it's absolutely worth the short drive. The Weardale area has plenty more to explore once you're there.
