Bow Lee Plantation

The woodland at Bow Lee stretches across a proper slice of County Durham countryside, about four miles south of Bishop Auckland. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country estate - conifer plantations mixed with broadleaf sections, the kind of place where you'll find forestry tracks cutting through dense canopy and the occasional management sign nailed to an old pine.

Walking here is the main draw. The terrain is straightforward enough, mostly on firm tracks, so it suits families with decent-aged kids and anyone who wants an easy ramble without the steep climbs you get further into the Pennines. On a clear day the views open up across the valley - nothing dramatic, but genuinely pleasant. The forest itself has that quiet, slightly austere appeal of commercial forestry: less cosy than ancient woodland, more honest somehow.

It's free to access, and you can turn up whenever. Reckon on an hour to ninety minutes for a decent circuit, depending which way you wander. Bring proper footwear though - mud happens here, especially after rain. The nearby caravan parks at Leekworth and Mickleton Mill make it a sensible afternoon stop if you're based locally, though it's not the kind of place you'd build a whole day around.

Best visited in autumn or spring when the light cuts through properly and you're not battling midges or crowds. Summer can feel a bit oppressive under the trees.
