Blow's Down

A steep climb up chalky slopes rewards you with views across the Chilterns that stretch for miles. Blow's Down, just east of Dunstable, isn't the tallest point around, but the grassland summit feels properly isolated despite being close to civilization.

The walk itself is the point here. It's not a casual stroll - the gradient is genuine and the chalk can be slippery after rain, so proper footwear matters. Most people manage the ascent in twenty minutes or so, though the descent tests your knees on the way back down. The views northwards across Bedfordshire and southwards into the Chiltern valleys are the real draw. On a clear day you can pick out landmarks for ages.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's too short and steep for a leisurely family ramble, though older kids who can handle a bit of climb might enjoy bagging the summit. History types won't find much - it's genuinely just a hill - so treat it as a leg-stretcher rather than a destination in itself.

If you're based at Merlin Farm Camping near Whipsnade Zoo, Blow's Down works as a morning walk before heading to the zoo proper. The Woodlands site is slightly further but puts you in good striking distance for exploring the wider Chilterns. Allow an hour round trip, more if you're lingering for the views. Go early morning when the chalk is dry and you'll have the place mostly to yourself.
