Blackstone Edge

The walk up to Blackstone Edge is proper moorland hiking, the kind that leaves your legs knowing they've done something. This 1,400-foot ridge rises above Hebden Bridge and gives you the sort of views across the Pennines that make you understand why people get obsessed with wild walking. The stone itself - a dark millstone grit - dominates the summit, and on clear days you're looking across Lancashire and Yorkshire both at once.

Getting up there takes about an hour from the nearest car park, depending on fitness and how much you faff about with photos. The path's well-trodden but can be boggy in the middle bits, so proper boots matter. Once you're up, the space feels properly remote even though Hebden Bridge is just a few miles south - that's the trick of the Pennines, they compress distance into vertical.

Walkers will get the most from this spot, particularly anyone who likes the grit and exposure of proper moorland without needing technical scrambling skills. Families with older kids manage it fine, though younger ones might find the slog tedious. The summit's windswept enough that you won't want to linger in bad weather, but on a decent day it's worth the grind.

If you're camped at Hebden Bridge Caravan and Motorhome Club just outside town, Blackstone Edge pairs nicely with exploring the valley itself. Allow three hours for the round trip with time on top, and go early - the moor fills up on weekends.
