Ballyvester Beach

The strand at Ballyvester stretches wide and golden, backed by low dunes and the kind of quiet you don't find on busier Northern Irish beaches. It's about twenty minutes south of Newtownards, tucked into Ards and North Down where the coastline turns gentle and manageable. The beach itself is proper family-friendly - shallow enough for young swimmers to wade, firm enough for a decent walk without sinking up to your ankles. Low tide reveals loads of sand; high tide squeezes things a bit, but there's still plenty of room. The real draw is the lack of crowds. You'll see locals, dog walkers, the odd camper from Dunroamin just down the road, but nothing that feels rammed. Rock pools appear at low tide if kids want to hunt for life. The backdrop is farmland rather than dramatic cliffs, which some find dull, others find restful. Worth allowing a couple of hours if you're combining it with a beach walk towards nearby spots. There's no facilities to speak of - no shops, cafes or car park amenities that I could find - so come prepared. The nearest caravan parks at Millisle (Dunroamin) and Sandycove are both within easy striking distance, making this a solid half-day option if you're basing yourself nearby. Go when the weather's settled; autumn or spring tends to be clearest. It won't blow your mind, but it's a proper working beach where people actually come to swim and relax, not just photograph.
