About Auchengray Hill
Allow yourself a couple of hours there and back from the base. The path isn't technical, though it does get boggy after rain and the wind can be fierce on the exposed upper slopes. Go in decent boots. It's the kind of walk where you'll see grouse, maybe a red kite if you're lucky, and very few other people.
This is a walker's hill, not a tourist attraction with facilities or a car park and café. There's no entrance fee because there's nothing formally managed about it - you just turn up and go. That's partly why it's worth doing. Families with younger kids might find the open moorland a bit bleak and featureless, but anyone who enjoys proper Lowland scenery will appreciate it.
If you're based at one of the caravan sites dotted around Dumfries - Criffel View or Marthrown of Mabie are closest at just over two miles away - Auchengray makes an excellent half-day outing to break up a park holiday. Pair it with a visit to Caerlaverock Castle, which is much more conventional but genuinely worth the detour, and you've got a cracking day sorted.
