Ashes Coppice

Walking into Ashes Coppice feels like stepping back in time. This woodland near Kendal is proper old-growth forest - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think, which is increasingly rare these days. The trees are substantial, the paths wind through genuine coppice woodland rather than plantation rows, and there's real character to the place.

It's a walker's wood, no question. The terrain is manageable rather than punishing, making it decent for families with older kids who won't need carrying every five minutes. You'll want to allow a couple of hours to do it properly - rushing through feels like a waste. The leaf canopy does its job in summer, which matters if you're escaping proper heat, though autumn here must be genuinely lovely if you catch the colours right.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's the kind of place that rewards wandering rather than ticking boxes. Bring a map if you want one, though the paths are reasonably clear.

If you're based at Lakeland Glamping or the Kendal Camping and Caravanning Club Site - both barely three miles away - this works as a solid half-day outing. It won't compete with a walk up Catbells or a proper fell day, but it's exactly what you need on one of those in-between days when you want woodland air and space to think rather than another crowded tourist trap.
