Aconbury Camp

Walk up to the Iron Age hillfort and you're standing on earthworks that have survived for over two thousand years. Aconbury Camp is a proper piece of Herefordshire's ancient past - a defended settlement from around 500 BC, with multiple ramparts still visible if you know what you're looking for. The site sits just south of Hereford, and while there's no visitor centre or grand interpretation boards, that's rather the point. You get the real thing without the crowds.

The hillfort itself is small but atmospheric. Those concentric defensive ditches tell a story of Iron Age communities who chose this spot for good reason - you can see across the surrounding land from up here. It's a short walk from the nearest lane, accessible to most people with decent shoes, though not a major expedition. History buffs will spend a good hour poking about, tracing the rampart lines and imagining the timber-built structures that once stood here. Families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract - there's not much to see beyond the earthworks themselves - but teenagers studying Iron Age Britain should definitely make the effort.

Free to visit, open whenever. Pair it with your base at one of the nearby campsites - Broadmeadow Glamping or Primrose Smallholding are both within three miles - and you've got an easy morning activity before heading into Hereford or exploring the wider valley. Don't expect fanfare. Come for the archaeology and the quiet.
