Aconbury Hill

Standing at 335 metres, this modest Herefordshire peak rewards the steady climb with sweeping views across the Wye Valley and into Wales. The ascent through mixed woodland takes about 45 minutes from the village below, following clear paths that can get muddy after rain.

Walkers with a decent level of fitness will find it a proper rewarding half-day out. The summit itself is fairly open, making it brilliant for photographers on clear days when you can see the Black Mountains stretching westward. Families with older children who don't mind a decent walk will enjoy it, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections.

What makes Aconbury Hill special is how it sits between the gentler Herefordshire countryside and the more dramatic Welsh borders. From Hereford, it's an easy drive south to reach the various starting points, and the hill sits conveniently close to several camping spots including Ridge Hill Caravan & Camping and Tresseck Campsite.

Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space at the top for four-legged friends to stretch their legs properly. Early morning visits often reward you with mist hanging in the valleys below, while late afternoon light brings out the best colours in the surrounding farmland. Allow two to three hours return including time at the summit.
