Gateway to Robin Hood country, this former market town sits at the very edge of Sherwood Forest, making it proper brilliant for woodland walks and legendary tales. The outskirts blend into dense forestry - you've got Ashton's Wood and Double Clump practically on the doorstep, while larger expanses like Blyth Wood and Hodsock Plantation stretch for miles in every direction.

Worksop itself has seen better days, truth be told. The high street feels a bit tired midweek, though St. Mary and St. Martin Church remains a lovely focal point with its twin towers dominating the skyline. But step outside town and you're in different territory altogether.

Sherwood Forest's magic lies in these quieter corners. Fifty Acre Wood and Cherry Tree Clump offer proper peaceful rambles away from the tourist trails, while Tea Table Plantation provides cracking views across the Nottinghamshire countryside. Apley Head adds a watery element to your walks - not exactly Lake District material, but pleasant enough for an afternoon stroll.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Regular trains from Sheffield take about 45 minutes, while the A57 brings you in from both directions. Nottingham sits 25 miles south if you need a proper city fix.

Staying at one of the nearby forest parks makes absolute sense. You're bang in the heart of Robin Hood territory without the Nottingham crowds, plus those morning walks through Horse Pasture Screed or Forest Plantation hit differently when you can roll straight out of bed into the woodland. Evening settles quietly here - just you, the trees, and centuries of stories.
