The former mining town sits on the edge of proper countryside, where industrial heritage meets rolling Nottinghamshire farmland. Tom Hulatt's Mile provides an interesting outdoor gallery experience, stretching between its north and south ends through the town centre. The Cyril Leason historic site and Kirkby Cross remind you of the area's deep roots, while Strawberry Bank gives you a decent climb if you fancy stretching your legs.

Getting here is straightforward enough. Sutton Parkway station connects you to Nottingham in about 20 minutes, while the M1 runs just to the west. Kirkby-in-Ashfield station serves the neighbouring town if you need more transport options.

Staying at one of the holiday parks scattered around the area makes perfect sense. You're brilliantly placed for day trips to Sherwood Forest - proper Robin Hood country is practically on your doorstep. Nottingham's about half an hour by car, and the Peak District edges are within striking distance. It's that sweet spot where you get countryside peace but can still reach the action when you want it.
