Whitchurch

Clock towers don't usually grab headlines, but Whitchurch's St Alkmund's Church tower has been keeping time since the 13th century. This north Shropshire market town sits right on the Welsh border, close enough that you can pop over for lunch in Wrexham if you fancy. The High Street still has that proper market town feel - independent shops mixed with the usual suspects, though it can feel a bit sleepy on weekday afternoons.

Fenn's Wood and Maelor Forest provide excellent walking territory within easy reach, while the Wartime Aircraft Recovery Group Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into local aviation history. Those after something more contemplative should head to St Mary the Virgin, a lovely medieval church that's well worth a look.

The real draw here is the countryside. Rolling farmland stretches in every direction, dotted with small villages and crossed by quiet lanes perfect for cycling. Whixall Marina sits a few miles east - not exactly Lake Windermere, but decent enough for messing about in boats. The nearby meres and pools, including Wardle Pools, attract plenty of wildlife.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The A41 runs right through town, connecting you to the M54 and beyond. Chester's about 20 miles north if you need a proper city fix, while Shrewsbury sits roughly the same distance south.

Staying at one of the holiday parks dotted around the area makes perfect sense. You're close enough to explore Whitchurch properly, but far enough out to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Shropshire countryside. Plus, you've got easy access to both the Welsh borders and the broader delights of the county.
