Whixall Marina

The marina sits on the edge of Whixall Moss, a proper working waterway where narrowboats come and go with genuine purpose rather than just for the postcards. It's the sort of place where you can watch people actually moor up, load supplies, and get on with their canal life - no theatre about it.

What you're really here for is the walking. The towpath stretches out in both directions, and it's genuinely lovely for a couple of hours on foot. The water's dark and reflective, bordered by reeds and the kind of flat Shropshire countryside that doesn't shout for attention but grows on you. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - herons, grebes, and various ducks work the water throughout the year. It's tranquil rather than thrilling, which suits some people perfectly and bores others rigid after half an hour.

Whitchurch is just down the road if you need supplies or a proper meal. It's not dramatic scenery - no dramatic scenery for miles around here - but it's the sort of place that works brilliantly if you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby. Abbey Green Farm is practically on your doorstep at less than a mile away, and Colemere Park sits four miles off if you're after more facilities. Come early morning or late afternoon when the light's decent and the towpath's quiet. It costs nothing to walk it, and parking appears straightforward, though facilities at the marina itself are minimal. Good for a morning ramble alongside a week's touring in the area.
