Warminster

Ancient burial mounds dot the hilltops here, where Iron Age settlers once gazed across what's now one of Wiltshire's most underrated market towns. Warminster sits in a proper valley, ringed by dramatic chalk downs that offer some of the county's finest walking without the crowds you'll find around Salisbury.

The town itself keeps things refreshingly real. No fancy boutiques or overpriced tea rooms - just a working market town that's been doing its thing since medieval times. The Minster Church of St Denys anchors the centre, while The Obelisk on the outskirts marks where locals have gathered for centuries. It's the kind of place where the high street still matters and you can actually park without selling a kidney.

But it's the surrounding landscape that makes this area special. Battlesbury Hill and Scratchbury Hill frame the town like ancient sentries, both topped with Iron Age hill forts that offer cracking views across the Salisbury Plain. These aren't gentle strolls - expect proper climbs rewarded with panoramas that stretch to Dorset on clear days. Cotley Hill and the wonderfully named Knook Horse Hill provide equally dramatic walking, while Arn Hill Down offers a gentler introduction to the area's chalk downland.

Getting here couldn't be easier - Warminster station sits right on the main line from London Waterloo, making it a brilliant base for car-free escapes. The nearby holiday parks, particularly around Longleat Forest, put you within easy reach of both the downs and the famous safari park. It's proper countryside without the tourist circus, where you can walk ancient paths and still grab a decent pint afterwards.
