Bradford-on-Avon

Saxon stones still pepper the streets where wool merchants once counted their fortunes. Bradford-on-Avon sits tight against the River Avon like a honey-coloured jewel, its medieval core barely touched by the centuries that followed. Day trips write themselves from here. Bath's only eight miles north, easily reached via the spectacular railway that hugs the valley through Avoncliff and Freshford. The Avoncliff Aqueduct carries the Kennet and Avon Canal overhead - a proper bit of Victorian showing off. Iford Manor's gardens are worth the short drive for anyone who likes their landscapes designed rather than wild.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Widbrook Barns or Bath Mill Lodge Retreat puts you right in the thick of Wiltshire's best countryside. You can walk the Kennet and Avon towpath straight from town, cycle the quiet lanes that connect ancient villages, or simply potter about Bradford's antique shops and tea rooms. It's the sort of place that rewards slow exploration rather than ticking off attractions.
