Iford Manor

The garden at Iford Manor is the real star here - a proper Italian renaissance garden wedged into a Wiltshire valley, designed by Harold Peto in the early 1900s. You get sweeping lawns, clipped hedges, stone terraces and a colonnade that feels weirdly transported from somewhere continental. The manor house itself dates back to the 17th century, but it's the grounds that justify the trip from Bradford-on-Avon, just two miles away.

Walking through is unhurried work - there are plenty of steps, narrow paths, and surprise corners that reveal themselves slowly. Most people spend a solid hour here without feeling rushed, though if you're just doing a quick loop you could manage forty minutes. The whole thing works beautifully as a side quest during a Wiltshire park holiday; pair it with time at Widbrook Barns or Marsh Farm a few miles on, and you've got a proper day sorted.

Historically minded visitors will appreciate Peto's work - he was a serious garden architect, and this place shows his hand clearly. Families with young children might find the steps and lack of open running space a bit limiting, but older kids who can manage slopes will enjoy the maze-like exploration of it all.
