Chippenham

A proper Victorian railway boom town, Chippenham grew up fast when the Great Western Railway rolled through in the 1840s. Today it's got that solid market town feel - busy enough to have decent shops and restaurants, but still manageable for a weekend potter.

Wander the old town centre and you'll spot some lovely Georgian terraces alongside Victorian railway architecture. The high street's fairly typical these days - mix of chains and independents, though it does quiet down midweek. What makes Chippenham work as a base is its brilliant transport links and proximity to proper countryside.

You're perfectly placed for woodland walks here. Close Wood and Derry Wood offer proper rambling territory, while the ancient Bradenstoke Abbey ruins make for an atmospheric afternoon out. Maud Heath's Monument commemorates a 15th-century lady who built a causeway for travellers - bit of local history worth seeking out.

The countryside around here is classic North Wiltshire - rolling hills, ancient woodlands like Great Bodnage Copse and Melsome Wood, and that gentle Cotswolds fringe landscape. Bath's just 20 minutes by train, making day trips easy. The M4 corridor location means London's reachable, but you're also well positioned for Marlborough, Devizes, and the Cotswolds proper.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You get that countryside feel while being close enough to nip into town for supplies or a decent pub meal. The railway station's handy for car-free exploration too - trains run regularly to Bath, Reading, and London Paddington.
