Close Wood

Close Wood is a proper working forest just outside Chippenham, the sort of place locals know about but tourists tend to miss. It's ancient woodland - the kind with bluebells in spring that genuinely take your breath away - mixed with managed forestry that keeps it ticking over. You're walking through a genuine landscape here, not a manicured park, which means muddy paths in winter and that rich leaf smell that reminds you why you came to Wiltshire in the first place.

The main draw is straightforward: walking. There are decent tracks running through the trees, nothing too taxing, though underfoot can be boggy depending on the season. It works well for families with school-age kids who don't need constant entertainment, and for serious walkers wanting a quick leg-stretch between other things. The forest has enough going on - stream crossings, changes in elevation, the occasional bit of wildlife - to hold attention for a couple of hours without feeling samey.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. Access appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally since woodland access can be complicated. Spring's the obvious choice if you can swing it, though autumn's lovely too when the whole thing goes copper-coloured.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Blackland Lakes or Roe Deer Fields are close - Close Wood makes a solid half-day outing. It's real forest without the tourist infrastructure, which some people find refreshing and others find slightly underwhelming. Depends what you're after.
