Warleigh Weir

The River Avon slips through a narrow gorge here, and you'll find Warleigh Weir doing exactly what it's been doing since medieval times - controlling the water flow with quiet efficiency. It's a proper working structure, not a tourist attraction dressed up in brass plaques, which is exactly what makes it worth the visit if you're walking the Avon Valley.

The weir itself is modest in scale but the setting is genuinely lovely. You get decent views from the path above, and on a clear day the water moving through the stones has that hypnotic quality that makes you lose twenty minutes without noticing. The surrounding countryside rolls away in all directions - very Somerset, very peaceful.

Walkers get the most from this. It sits on established footpaths between Bradford-on-Avon and beyond, so combine it with a longer ramble rather than treating it as a standalone stop. History types will appreciate the medieval engineering, though don't expect information boards or facilities. Families with young legs will manage the walk fine, though there's not much to do once you're there - no cafe, no visitor centre, just you and the river.

It's free, obviously, and takes about fifteen minutes to properly look around. If you're based at Campwell Farm or any of the caravan sites within five miles, it's a decent half-hour detour on a country walk. Worth fitting in, but not worth planning a trip around on its own.
