Upton Cow Down

Standing 209 metres above sea level, this chalk downland summit offers proper views across the Wiltshire countryside without the crowds you'll find at more famous spots. The walk up from Warminster takes about 45 minutes through typical downland - sheep pastures, scattered copses, and that distinctive rolling terrain that makes this part of England so satisfying to explore on foot.

Families with older children will get the most from Upton Cow Down, though the gradual climb means it's not too taxing for reasonably fit walkers of any age. What you're really coming for are the views - on a clear day you can see right across to Salisbury Plain and the distant outline of other chalk hills. It's the sort of place where you'll want to bring a flask and spend a proper hour taking it all in.

The summit itself is unremarkable - just grass and a few scattered trees - but that's rather the point. This feels like authentic Wiltshire walking country, well away from tourist trails. If you're staying at Center Parcs Longleat Forest or one of the other holiday parks near Warminster, it makes for a lovely morning out before heading to Longleat itself. Free to access, naturally, and best visited in decent weather when those views really pay off.
