Scratchbury Hill

The walk up Scratchbury Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Warminster, and the effort pays off with proper views across the Wiltshire countryside. Once you're on top, you'll spot the Iron Age fort - earthwork ramparts that still mark out the defensive walls after nearly two thousand years. It's not dramatic like some hillforts, but it tells a clear story if you know what you're looking at.

This is one for walkers rather than families after a quick picnic stop. The gradient's steady but genuine, and there's no playground or cafe waiting at the summit. What you get instead is space and perspective - the kind of place where you realise how much chalk downland still surrounds this part of Wiltshire. History buffs will appreciate the earthworks, though they're subtle enough that kids might get restless once they've reached the top.

Go on a clear day. The view dissolves into grey nothing if the weather closes in, and there's nowhere to shelter up there. Allow an hour return if you're taking it slowly.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Center Parcs Longleat Forest is only four miles away, or there's Country View Camping further out - Scratchbury works as a morning outing before heading to Longleat House or exploring the broader chalk landscape. It's less polished than a country estate visit, but that's rather the point.
