Dramatic peaks pierce the sky like ancient guardians, while wild moorland stretches endlessly toward a coastline that feels utterly untouched. Sutherland proper might be modest in size, but it sits at the heart of some of Scotland's most spectacular Highland scenery.

Point of Stoer commands the headland with views that'll leave you speechless on a clear day. The lighthouse perched on these cliffs has watched over fishing boats for generations, and the walk out there is properly invigorating. Clashnessie Fall tumbles down the hillside in a white ribbon that's particularly impressive after heavy rain.

Those peaks aren't just for show either. Cnoc an Dubharlainn and the twin summits of An Fharaid Mhòr and An Fhairaidh Bheag offer serious hill walking with rewards to match. The views from up there take in the entire Assynt landscape - lochs, crags, and that magnificent coastline rolling away to the horizon.

Down in the village itself, the churches tell their own Highland story. The Free Presbyterian Church of Scotland and Assynt Free Church represent the area's deep religious traditions, while the Lochinver and Assynt War Memorial reminds you of the price paid by these remote communities during the world wars.

Getting here means committing to the journey - it's a fair drive from Inverness up the A835 and A837. But that's rather the point. Lochinver, just down the road, provides shops and the excellent Lochinver Leisure Centre if you need facilities.

Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense. You're right in the thick of this Highland wilderness, with those walking routes and coastal paths on your doorstep. No rushing about trying to see everything in a day trip from somewhere civilised.
