An Ruadh Loch

An Ruadh Loch sits in raw Highland territory near Sutherland, a proper mountain lake that demands respect. The water here is dark and deep, ringed by steep slopes that drop straight down - it's the kind of place that makes you understand why the Highlands feel so untamed. There's no visitor centre, no cafe, no pretence. Just the loch itself and the landscape around it.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The walk in takes effort but the reward is genuine solitude - you'll likely have the place to yourself even in high season. The views back down the valley are excellent, especially if weather cooperates. Bring a decent map and boots with grip because the terrain is boggy and the slopes are steep enough that a slip would be serious.

If you're camped at Clachtoll Beach just five miles down the road, An Ruadh Loch makes a cracking day trip for anyone with proper hill legs. It's not a casual stroll - allow three to four hours for a decent outing. The water is cold enough that swimming, while technically possible, is only for the committed. Most visitors come for the walking and the raw Highland scenery rather than sitting about.

Free to visit, naturally. No facilities whatsoever once you leave the road. This is Highland hiking in its proper form - beautiful but unforgiving. Well worth the walk if you know what you're getting into.
