Cnoc an Dubharlainn

The walk up Cnoc an Dubharlainn is short but solid - you're looking at maybe 90 minutes up and down if you're moving at a decent pace. It's not some epic highland slog; the peak sits at just over 300 metres, making it accessible for most people without needing serious kit or experience.

What you get for your effort is proper mountain air and views across Sutherland that stretch for miles on a clear day. The surrounding landscape is classic northwest highlands - moorland, lochs, and that distinctive sense of space you only find up here. It's the kind of walk where you can actually see what's coming, no thick forest to obscure things.

For families it works well enough if your kids are happy on a hill walk. It's not a slog that'll wear them out entirely, and there's nowhere particularly dangerous if you stay on track. Walkers wanting a quick leg-stretcher or a half-day outing will find it satisfying without overdoing it. History enthusiasts might get something from the Gaelic name alone - worth researching before you go.

The real advantage is proximity to Clachtoll Beach Campsite just down the road. You could easily base yourself there, do this walk in the morning, and still have half the day for the beach or exploring other bits of Sutherland. Fair point though - this is a small peak. Don't expect dramatic scenery or a grand summit. It's honest, it's there, and it's worth the detour if you're in the area rather than a reason to drive miles out of your way.
