Creag a' Braighe

The walk up Creag a' Braighe isn't long, but it feels proper rewarding once you're up there. This Highland peak rises from the moorland south of Sutherland, and from the summit you get views that stretch across to the north coast - on a clear day you're looking at some of the wildest, emptiest terrain in Britain.

It's a straightforward hill rather than a technical climb. Most walkers manage it in a couple of hours round trip, though the terrain underfoot can be boggy in places, so decent boots matter. The approach is moorland walking, which means you're scanning tussocky ground and watching where you put your feet, but there's something satisfying about that. You won't find crowds here.

This is ideal for hill walkers who've had enough of the tourist-trampled routes but still want decent views without needing rock-climbing skills. Kids aged ten upwards with hill-walking experience would manage it fine. If you're after a gentle stroll with a café at the end, look elsewhere.

If you're based at Clachtoll Beach Campsite - five miles away - this makes a natural morning or afternoon expedition. The campsite itself sits by the water near Lochinver, so you could combine a coastal day with a hill day without moving your pitch. The Highlands around here are quieter than Cairngorms territory, which suits some people perfectly. Allow three hours total if you're moving at a reasonable pace and stopping to admire the view.
