An Fhairaidh Bheag

The walk in from Clachtoll area offers decent views across the moor and coastline, and the summit gives you genuine Highland perspective without requiring rock climbing skills or serious technical gear.

This is a walker's hill rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. Allow two to three hours for a round trip depending on your fitness and which route you tackle. The terrain is rough underfoot - bog and heather mostly - so proper boots matter. You'll not find a café at the top, though the views west towards the coast are worth the effort alone.

Families with older kids and teenagers will manage this fine; younger children will find it tiring without the payoff of a dramatic summit. Solo walkers and hill types come for the solitude and to bag another peak. There's no admission fee because there's nothing to charge for - it's moorland access. Pick a clear day if you can, as cloud rolls in fast here and visibility goes to nothing.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits just 1.6 miles away and rates brilliantly, making it a logical base if you're tackling the peak. You could combine it with other Sutherland walking rather than making the journey just for this one hill. Worth doing as part of a bigger Highland trip, less so as a solo day out.
