A' Chlach Thuill, dun site

You'll find yourself standing on moorland that doesn't immediately shout 'archaeological site' - that's rather the point. A' Chlach Thuill is an Iron Age dun, essentially the remains of a fortified dwelling that once commanded this stretch of Sutherland coast. What you're looking at is a circular stone structure, eroded but still discernible if you know what to look for. The walls, though crumbled, tell you this was serious construction for its time - built to impress and protect.

Historyophiles will find this genuinely rewarding. The dun dates back around 2,000 years, and standing here you're quite literally on the same ground where Iron Age Scots built their homes. It's not Instagram-friendly or polished - no visitor centre, no interpretation boards - which means you're getting the raw thing. That said, it does require some effort to find and even more to work out what you're seeing.

Clachtoll Beach Campsite sits just over the road, making this an easy add-on to a coastal camping trip in the Highlands. Allow perhaps 20 minutes to walk the site and contemplate the view. Go in decent weather - the moorland exposed position means wind and drizzle aren't uncommon. This works best if you're already exploring the Sutherland coast rather than making a special journey. The landscape around it matters as much as the stones themselves.
