The town centres around a surprisingly wide high street that feels more like a village square. Old Well Theatre provides evening entertainment when the weather turns, while Tolouse gallery showcases local artists whose work often reflects the dramatic landscape surrounding the settlement. Most visitors come for the hills though - Big Hill dominates the eastern skyline, while Capel Fell and Scaw'd Fell offer cracking views north towards the Lowther Hills.

Walking here ranges from gentle strolls to proper hill days. Craig Fell and Priestgill Head make for satisfying half-day hikes, though serious peak baggers will want to tackle Rivox Fell and the neighbouring Rivox Moor. The Lord Dowding Memorial marks one of the area's wartime connections - a sobering reminder among all that natural beauty.

Getting here involves a bit of planning. The M74 runs nearby, but Moffat sits well off the main drag - which is precisely why it remains unspoilt. Dumfries lies about 20 miles south, while you're looking at an hour's drive to reach Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Staying at one of the local parks makes perfect sense. You'll wake up surrounded by walking country, and after a day on Hunterheck Hill or exploring the archaeological remains at Milton of Tassiesholm, you can return to your pitch without battling traffic. The landscape here rewards those who take time to explore properly.
