Capel Fell

The walk up Capel Fell from Moffat is straightforward enough, but what you get for your effort is a proper Highland-style view that punches well above its 600-metre height. On a clear day you can see right across the Lowlands, with the Solway Firth glinting away to the south and the higher peaks of the Lake District just visible on the horizon. The route itself climbs through moorland and rough grass - nothing technical, just steady uphill. Allow two hours return from the car park, maybe a bit longer if you're stopping to catch your breath and admire the valleys below. It's ideal for walkers who want something satisfying without needing ropes or scrambling experience. Families with reasonably fit kids will manage fine, though the terrain's rough underfoot in places, so proper boots are worth bringing. The weather up there changes fast - I've seen it go from sunny to cloud-covered in minutes, so pack a windproof even if the valley looks calm. Free to visit, obviously. The surrounding area's got plenty of other walking options, so you could easily build a few days around exploring the range. Early morning's your best bet for clear views - by afternoon, cloud often rolls in from the west.
