Big Hill

Standing at 1,214 feet, this modest hill north of Moffat offers surprisingly good views across the Southern Uplands without the slog of a proper Munro. The name's a bit tongue-in-cheek - it's hardly Ben Nevis - but the panorama from the top takes in the Lowther Hills and on clear days stretches south towards the Lake District. The walk up takes about an hour from the nearest parking spot, following well-worn sheep tracks through typical Borders countryside of rough grass and scattered gorse. Families with older children will manage it fine, though the final approach gets a bit steep and can be boggy after rain. It's the sort of hill that rewards effort without punishing inexperience. The summit itself is marked by a small cairn and offers a decent spot for a picnic if the wind's not too fierce. Hill walkers based at nearby sites like Drumroamin Farm or the Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site will find it makes a good warm-up for the higher peaks further north, while casual visitors get a proper taste of Scottish hill country without the commitment. Free to climb obviously, and accessible year-round, though winter conditions can make the going tricky.
