Dyke Farm Nature Reserve

The moorland around Moffat opens up properly at Dyke Farm Nature Reserve, where you get a real sense of what Scottish lowland countryside is actually like when you're not on a main road. It's the kind of place where the quiet does something to you - no gift shop, no tannoy announcements, just grouse and heather and the occasional walker with a map that's older than they are.

What you're looking at is working farmland that's been managed for wildlife, which means it doesn't try too hard. History enthusiasts might find the wider context interesting - this corner of Scotland has serious medieval bones - but Dyke Farm itself is more about what you can see now than what happened five hundred years ago. Families with young kids should manage fine on the easier routes, though it's exposed, so check the weather before you drag them up.

It works well as a morning outing if you're staying at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site just down the road, or as a breath of fresh air between longer days out. Combine it with a walk around Moffat itself and you've got a decent day sorted. The reserve costs nothing and has no fixed hours that we can pin down - basically, turn up when the light's good and the wind isn't too mental.
