The riverside walk at Annanside, just outside Moffat, is one of those places that catches you by surprise. You're expecting a standard recreation ground and instead you get proper countryside running alongside the River Annan, with decent paths that actually go somewhere rather than just looping back on themselves after ten minutes.

It's ideal for families who want to burn off some energy without committing to a serious hike. The walk itself takes between thirty minutes and an hour depending on which direction you fancy and how often the kids stop to investigate the water. The river is lovely here - not dramatic, but genuinely pleasant to spend time beside. On a clear day you get decent views across to the Lowland hills that frame Moffat.

If you're staying at Moffat Camping and Caravanning Club Site or one of the other caravan parks nearby - Howslack Farm is just 2.3 miles away - this works as a proper alternative to yet another circuit around the campsite. Free to access and no hassle with car parks or entry fees.

Walkers won't find it challenging, which means it's bit thin on drama if you're the serious rambling type. But for a gentle stretch of the legs after a long drive, or for giving younger children a proper riverside experience without the scrambling bits they might find overwhelming, it does the job. Go early morning if you want it quiet. The paths can get muddy after rain, so watch your footing.
