The University of Wales Trinity Saint David campus dominates the town centre - one of the smallest university towns in Britain - but the surrounding Teifi Valley countryside is where the real magic lies.

But honestly, most visitors come for the walking. Allt Goch forest provides decent woodland trails, though the best rambling is along the Teifi itself.

The countryside here feels properly Welsh - green valleys, stone walls, sheep everywhere. It's pastoral without being picture-postcard twee, and refreshingly uncommercial compared to the tourist honeypots further south. Aberystwyth is only 25 minutes by car if you need a coastal fix, but the inland scenery has its own appeal.

There's a railway station too, though services are limited - check timetables carefully. From nearby holiday parks like Treberfedd Farm or the smaller sites scattered around the valley, Lampeter makes a good base for exploring mid Wales without the crowds you'd find on the coast. The town itself won't occupy you for long, but the surrounding countryside certainly will.
