Gaer-fach

A Iron Age hill fort sits quietly above Lampeter, commanding views across the Teifi Valley. Gaer-fach isn't a major draw - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no car park with a coach party waiting. What you get instead is the genuine article: earthwork ramparts that still hold their shape after two thousand years, and the satisfaction of standing where Celtic communities once defended their territory.

The walk up takes about ten minutes from the lane, and it's steep enough to catch your breath. Once you're there, you can trace the defensive ditches and banks that form concentric circles around the hilltop. In good light, the engineering becomes clear - this wasn't accidental terrain, but deliberate design for protection. Archaeologists reckon it was occupied around the 1st century BC, a period when these hillforts across Wales were serious business.

Who gets the most from it? Walkers with a genuine interest in Iron Age settlement, rather than families wanting a quick morning out. Kids might manage twenty minutes before wondering why there are no facilities or interpretive panels. It's the sort of place that rewards some homework beforehand - knowing what you're looking at makes the visit proper worthwhile.
