The Kingsbridge estuary opens up like a secret waterworld, all tidal creeks and wooded valleys tumbling down to sheltered water. This South Hams market town sits at the head of one of Devon's most dramatic rias, where the River Avon has carved a deep channel through rolling countryside before meeting the sea.

Kingsbridge itself is proper Devon - narrow streets, independent shops, and a working quay that still feels like it matters. The weekly market brings life to the Shambles, while the old coaching inns hint at busier times when this was the main route to Salcombe and the coast.

But it's the surrounding area that really delivers. South Sands and North Sands bracket the mouth of Salcombe harbour, both brilliant for families and serious about their Blue Flag credentials. Soar Mill Cove is the dramatic one - a wild beach between towering cliffs that feels properly remote despite being just a short drive away. The more adventurous can seek out Boat Beach or the lesser-known Mouthwell Beach for a bit of solitude.

Inland, the landscape shifts to ancient woodland. Fir Wood and Collaton Wood offer proper rambling territory, while Tor Woods provides easier walks with glimpses of the estuary through the trees. Overbeck's Museum and Gardens, perched above Salcombe, combines subtropical gardens with fascinating Edwardian collections - well worth the detour.

Getting here means the A381 from Totnes, a pleasant 20-minute drive through South Devon countryside. The nearest rail connection is Totnes station, then bus or car for the final stretch. Staying at one of the nearby parks makes perfect sense - you're perfectly placed for both the coast and the moors, with Kingsbridge providing all the essentials plus some decent pubs for when the day trips are done.
