Tor Woods

Tor Woods is a proper woodland walk just outside Kingsbridge, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's mixed broadleaf forest - nothing massive or famous, but that's rather the point. You get tree-lined paths, a bit of elevation, and views over the surrounding Devon countryside without needing a map or special equipment.

Walkers will find it worthwhile for a couple of hours' ambling. The terrain's gentle enough for families with older kids, though younger ones might find it a bit samey after the first mile. There's something nice about forests that don't try too hard - no visitor centre, no branded merchandise, just trees and air.

The access arrangements aren't entirely clear from a distance, so ringing ahead to Kingsbridge's visitor information centre would be sensible. You're looking at a half-day outing, max. Don't expect dramatic vistas or dramatic anything, really. What you get is a decent woodland escape, the sort of thing that works well as a break from a caravan-based holiday rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Karrageen or Wilton Farm - both within three miles - this slots nicely into a broader South Devon itinerary. Pair it with a walk down to Start Point or a mooch around Kingsbridge town itself. It's the kind of place that reminds you why people retire to Devon, even if it won't keep you entertained all afternoon.
