Green Man Sanctuary

The Green Man Sanctuary sits just outside Kingsbridge, a proper slice of Devon woodland that feels properly removed from things despite being minutes from town. It's a nature reserve where you wander through mixed woodland, spot birds if you're lucky, and generally remember why you came down to South Devon in the first place.

What you're doing here is walking. There are paths - some well-maintained, others a bit rougher - that take you through the trees. You might see nuthatches, woodpeckers, the usual woodland cast of characters. The undergrowth changes with the seasons, which means revisiting wouldn't feel like a waste. Spring is when it's most alive. Autumn's when the light gets interesting.

It works best for keen birdwatchers and anyone who just wants a quiet hour away from the caravan. Kids get restless after about forty minutes unless you're really into spotting things. The terrain's uneven in places, so proper footwear matters more than you'd think.

Parking up at nearby Karrageen or Wilton Farm gives you easy access - both are strong five-star parks. Pop to the sanctuary before breakfast, grab a coffee in Kingsbridge afterwards. Don't expect manicured gardens or a visitor centre. This is conservation-minded and low-key, which is exactly what it should be. Allow ninety minutes if you're moving slowly, an hour if you're not.
