Hexham

This ancient market town sits proudly on a hill above the River Tyne, its golden sandstone buildings catching the light like something from a period drama. But Hexham isn't stuck in the past - it's a proper working town with independent shops, decent pubs, and a surprisingly good food scene.

Hexham Abbey dominates the skyline and rightly so. The Saxon crypt alone is worth the visit, dating back over 1,300 years. It's one of the finest examples of early church architecture in England, though most visitors rush past on their way to Hadrian's Wall without giving it proper attention.

The countryside around here is magnificent. Rolling hills stretch in every direction, punctuated by the occasional castle like Beaufront Castle, while the River Tyne meanders through the valley below. Tyne Green offers lovely walks and the Watersports Association makes good use of the river for those wanting to get on the water. For something gentler, the Sensory Garden provides a peaceful spot away from the market square bustle.

Golfers have two solid options with Hexham Golf Club and Tynedale Golf Club both offering decent layouts against the Northumbrian backdrop. The Ladycross Quarry Nature Reserve gives cracking views across the valley - it's a bit of a climb but well worth it on a clear day.

Getting here is straightforward enough. The train station connects directly to Newcastle and Carlisle, making it perfectly accessible without a car. Though you'll want one to explore the wider area properly.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes excellent sense for exploring both Hexham itself and the broader region. You're within striking distance of Hadrian's Wall, the North Pennines, and the Scottish Borders, while having a comfortable base to return to after long days out.
