Hexham Old Gaol

The cells in Hexham Old Gaol are proper cramped - you'll quickly understand why a stint here was no joke. Built in 1330, this stone fortress behind the abbey was where Border reivers, poachers and petty criminals actually spent their time, and the museum does a solid job of bringing that grim reality to life without turning it into a theme park.

You get the medieval jail on the ground floor with its original features intact - low doorways that make you duck, thick walls, and cells that feel genuinely claustrophobic. Upstairs covers the social history side: crime, punishment, and what daily life meant for both prisoners and jailers. It's not flashy, but it works. History buffs will find plenty to chew on; kids usually manage an hour before restlessness kicks in, though the climbing up and down helps break it up.

Hexham itself is a handsome market town worth a wander after - the abbey is right there if you're packing in attractions. The gaol sits perfectly within a Northumberland parks break. Springhouse Boutique Holiday Park is only five miles out and makes a decent base for exploring this part of the county - Hexham Abbey, the Roman fort at Corbridge, and the riverside walks all cluster nearby. East Farm Glamping is another option if you want something a touch different. The gaol isn't a full day's commitment, which is fine - it's exactly what it should be: authentic and unpretentious.
