Hereford proper feels unhurried - the sort of market town where locals still know each other's names and the high street isn't dominated by chains. The River Wye curves lazily past, offering gentle walks and proper countryside views just minutes from the city centre.

Hereford Cathedral dominates the skyline, home to the famous Mappa Mundi medieval map and the chained library. Worth the entry fee, especially on a quiet Tuesday when you'll have the ancient stones mostly to yourself. The Old House on High Town is Instagram gold - a wonky timber-framed museum that's been here since 1621.

Venture beyond the ring road and you're into proper Herefordshire countryside. Skirrid Fawr offers cracking views if you fancy a climb, while the Skirrid Mountain Inn claims to be Wales' oldest pub (it's actually just over the border). The walking here is superb - rolling hills, ancient woodlands like Pant-Skirrid Wood, and quiet lanes perfect for cycling.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Direct trains from Birmingham and Newport, with the M50 motorway providing swift connections from the M5. It's roughly 20 minutes from the Welsh border, making it a proper gateway to both the Wye Valley and the Black Mountains.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense for exploring this corner of the borderlands. You're close enough for cathedral visits and market browsing, yet surrounded by some of England's most unspoiled countryside. The combination of medieval history and outdoor adventure is hard to beat.
